nd the winter sports industry in China? And what

Winter sports are relatively new to China and not played by

many Chinese people. In recent years, the Chinese winter sports team particip

ated in some individual events in the 2016 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Seoul and

the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, and won some medals, including gold medals.

The development of winter sports in China suffers from reg

ional imbalance, with people in the northeastern region being

the most avid fans and practitioners of winter sports.

But after winning the bid to host the 2022 Winter Games, especially s

ince the issuing of a guideline that aims to prompt 300 million people to play winter sports by 20

22, the development of winter sports and the winter sports industry has gathered pace in China.

As the social sector plays a crucial role in the dev

elopment and popularization of sports, including winter sports, we sh

ould advocate and support its growth. Since the winter sports industry is part of the gene

ral sports industry, the expansion of the former automatically means the expansion of the latter.

Some local governments have used winning the bid to host the 2022 Winter Games as an in

spiration to popularize winter sports among children and youths. For example, some departments have

hosted various theme activities to spread knowledge about and attract more people to winter sports.

Since advancement in winter sports also signifies a country’s comprehensive sports s

trength, we should make concerted efforts to develop winter sports in China.

This quarter’s data show that China is avoiding this

The consumer inflation rate was 1.8 percent year-on-year and produce

r prices went up only 0.2 percent. A standard rule of thumb used by central bankers wor

ldwide is that the inflation rate should be targeted at about 2 percent per year

. This rule is actually built in to the mandate of the European Central Bank. So, the stable monetary policy of the Peop

le’s Bank of China, the nation’s central bank, is working.

The March unemployment rate in urban areas was 5.

2 percent, slightly below the level last year. Most economists define “full employ

ment” as anything below 6 percent, so we are not seeing significant pro

blematic unemployment even during a period of major economic transformation.

Xi’s speech draws positive reactions at Second Belt and Road

Editor’s note: President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing

on Friday.China is going to open much more as it did before f

or foreign investment, and this is quite important for the whole initiative.

Here is a collection of comments from foreign ministers, delegates, and reporters attending the forum.

President Xi offered a vision of the Belt and Road Initiative t

hat inspires confidence in us, especially as small island developing states.

Facing challenges such as global warming and lack of development

financing, we in the Caribbean region welcome the opportunities presented by the initiative.

President Xi must be commended for his visionary leadership an

d his boldness in offering a new path for a brighter and shared future.

President Xi’s speech was an assurance to Africa an

the rest of the world that the Belt and Road Initiative is a helping hand try to help Africa get out of the problems of poor infras

tructure. For me, I think it is very important. And African countries should clap hands for this assistance.

Improving the infrastructure, which is very key in reducing the cost of doing business

in Africa and at the same time creating job opportunities, will help Africa in a few years.

What really interests me is that President Xi talks about the fact that the

initiative boosts the developments of countries along the Belt and Road Initiative.

He talks about the fact that different railways have been built. Some other pipeli

nes have been also constructed. The Belt and Road Initiative has connected many different areas which are very importa

nt. We really need this kind of interconnection. So now countries will become closer due to the Belt and Road Initiative.

President Xi’s speech deeply motivated us and touch

ed our heart. I have the same feeling about world development. The speech really firms our belief in a more intercon

nected and mutually developed world. China’s policy of persisting in reform and opening up is an inspiring polic

y to the world. It will build so many bridges of mutual development for the belt and road region. China is going to main

tain a friendly and peaceful development attitude, and it will help the Belt & Road countries to get investment wit

h high quality. Also, President Xi really showed us a new model of development and investment, focusing on s

ustainable development, green economy, which helps the world to become a better place to live.

More Chinese will take medium- and short-distance trips during the May Day holiday after it was ext

By now, China Railway Express (Chengdu) has linked

overseas cities and 14 Chinese cities. It has seven international railway ch

annels and five international rail-sea combined channels to further open up the city.

Six years ago, when the initiative was put forward, Chengdu opened the first direct freight railway to reach L

odz in Poland, bridging a gap to link to Europe. Through the logistics channel, the products and servic

es from Chengdu were exported to meet the demands of countries and regions involved in the initiative. It beca

me an important platform for Chinese companies to go global and for foreign capital to be introduced.

For example, China Railway Express-Skyworth Express, with 41 full containers of televisio

ns and accessories, left Chengdu International Railway Port to reach Europe in March.

The express provided a more convenient channel for Shenzhen-ba

sed television manufacturer Skyworth Group to enter overseas markets.
